Rose's Luxury - Capital Hill

The process of even getting into this restaurant is an experience, but it was well worth it. With thoughtfulness put into every so I had no doubt that would continue into the bathrooms. In a restaurant with exposed brick and shabby-chic interior, it was no surprise to see white tiles set off with a chair rail molding. The marble sink and hanging mirror accented the wash room. The green walls show off one of two upstairs bathrooms. That window doesn't look outside, rather it overlooks the interior courtyard so you can see diners downstairs. 

I also took a shot of the single stall on the first floor. Not as cute, but a small touch with the small dresser. Here's more on Rose's Luxury.

China Chilcano - Chinatown

Well I certainly didn't expect this. Walking into the restroom of Jose Andres' sleek new Peruvian Asian fushion place, I didn't expect to be transported to sleep-a-way camp. Even the wood planks makes you feel like you're in a bunk or a really fashionable outhouse. All the walls are covered with chalk scribbles, and there's plenty of opportunity to add your own name.

Tillman's Roadhouse - Ft. Worth

This highly stylized outdoorsy restaurant's decor flowed into the restroom, with full door single stalls and white subway tiles all around. The pale wood accents set off the shabby chic interior.

La Condesa - Austin

In a quick visit to Austin we had chance to enjoy this restaurant and the great guacamole there. The stalls left much to be desired, but the sink area was a bit more stylized with a little of the industrial look and antique-looking faucets.

Toro Toro - Downtown

The lunch buffet in this massive new restaurant was outstanding and given how stylized every part of the place was, I expected something special from the bathrooms. The bathroom stall doors were lined with a cow hide design revealing a small European toilet inside. 

The most unique part though was yet to come. When you get to the sink area, there's a gap between the mirror and stainless steel trough sink. What you're looking at is the men's bathroom. You can't see much, just the bottom of stalls and the hands of men who happen to be using the sink at the same time as you.

Woodward Table - Downtown

I've been to this location back when it was Potenza (see my previous post) so it's always fun to come back to a place and see how the renovations have taken hold. As you might guess, the decor of Woodward Table is a bit tone down so the bathroom reflects that. A calming gray with white molding gives a nice accent in the dark restroom. I still like the single stalls with the full doors.  

 

 

There is one place where they left the Potezna accents in tact: 

 

Yup, inside the stalls the same bright red titles remain. Quite a distraction.

Volt - Frederick, MD

It was exciting to get to try the tasting menu at this Maryland restaurant from another Top Chef favorite, Bryan Voltaggio. Set in what looks like an old townhouse, the menu is anything but retro and the bathrooms followed suit. Sleek with glass and sharp edges, the full door stalls might seem transparent, but they don't reveal much. The basic sink area is clean and simple.

Kapnos - U Street

Having been to some of Mike Isabella's other restaurants, I knew there would be no skimping on the details in these restrooms. And I wasn't wrong. A "Gals" sign greets you on the way in. The stalls inside are a dark wood, highlighted by exposed bricks walls and a floor laid out with tiny titles. The sink area used some industrial elements with ornate mirrors and farmhouse faucets. Pretty nice job over all.

Teddy - Dupont

I'd been waiting for this place to open, expecting the decor to really land the "modern rough rider" theme. It's a bit more modern than I expected, but the women's bathroom is quite country.

There are three full door stalls, which I would normally like, but the doors didn't have an "occupied" indicator and the lock on the door is a simple pin lock. Not much insurance against an accidental walk in. Additionally, the stall are quite deep, meaning if that door swings open, you won't be able to quickly close it. 

Each stall has a quote above the magic eye toilet. The stall I chose had one from Amelia Earhart.

Then by the sinks stood more quotes, but not all were from women of Teddy's time. In fact one was from Eleanor Roosevelt which seemed a rather glaring
anachronism. Also, the faucets seemed really out of place. I think they could have gone much more period like, especially since they're not automatic. 

I will say it was quite a large bathroom for three stands. But I guess given the size of the restaurant, I shouldn't have been surprised.

B Too - Logan Circle

I'm guessing there's a larger bathroom in the upstairs dining room, but downstairs there was a single stall. It was definitely brighter than the rest of the restaurant. I enjoyed the surprise in the pop of color with the glass tiles.  The toilet was a bit of an odd shape. It's a Belgian restaurant but I didn't expect the fixtures to be from there. Not sure the purpose of the long counter but I guess it clearly outlined the length of the room. Here's more on B Too.

Aressana Spa Hotel - Santorini, Greece

Please excuse the mess. I'm including this picture of our hotel bathroom because I was pleasantly surprised to find this large of a bathroom at an island hotel. Granted it was a pretty nice hotel, but our room wasn't anything to write home about. The large stall shower was a welcomed sight and I liked the added touch of the step up from the vanity area. Kuzina - Athens, Greece

This cute little modern Greek restaurant stood out among all the touristy spots with an Acropolis view. You have to walk over a large glass floor revealing the restaurant's wine cellar to get to the two stall restroom. I must show you the toilet bowl first. It's self-cleaning!

After using it, you press the cleaning button and a disinfecting arm pops out while the rim rotates for a 360 degree cleaning. I know there are lot of folks who aren't the biggest fan of Athens, but this was a winner for me. 

I did find the sink area confusing. Nothing besides the hand dryer was magic eye, which doesn't seem to keep the germs away in this part of the bathroom. The country faucets with the raised basin did fit the restaurant's modern country theme.  Over all, I was a fan of Kuzina's restroom.

Barmini - Penn Quarter

We decided to break Passover at this new, reservation-only bar and were certainly not disappointed. I had heard it was quirky so I expected nothing less from the bathroom.  It wasn't over the top but it certainly provided everything you might need when using the toilet (which was a bit small and an odd shape I must say).

Public - New York City

I know it's been a while, but I haven't given up on convincing restaurants to include their restrooms as a part of the dining experience. One place that certainly has taken that into consideration is Public. I can't fully capture the charm of this restroom in the pictures - whimsy mixed with sophistication.  The two identical single-stalls (I was in both) each had a door that looked like it was recycled from a midcentury school building (which I'm guessing is the idea) - frosted half glass with a wood frame and a mail slot.

Inside the room was coated floor to ceiling with iridescent glass titles. The high ceiling allowed for a shelve above the toilet with white vases. At the sink area, the mirror was flush with the wall with paper towels stacked on the side. On the other side of the sink was a case holding columns of mini bars of soap wrapped in Public's logo. Yes there was a full liquid soap dispenser on the sink but being able to slip a small bar of soap in your pocket somehow seems like you're getting away with something. Also feeding into the public school setting, you can grab a No.2 pencil on your way out of the restaurant.

Arbutus - London

I was a big fan of this modern British restaurant in Soho and I was so hoping to enjoy the restroom as well. I wasn't let down:

Sure the huge London mural is a bit on the nose, but as a visitor, I loved the graphic touch. The sinks and counters were minimal like many of the restrooms I visited in the city, but the black counter top definitely made the sinks stand out.

Though it seems the designer got a little tired by the time it came to the side-by-side stalls but they do have full doors, which I am always a fan of.

For one of the swankiest restaurants in London, Gordon Ramsay's Maze's bathroom wasn't much to look at.  Maybe going a little too streamlined and modern, this single stall had all the basics but nothing super exciting. Guess we'll have to leave the gimmicks to the gastronomy-driven plate.

Bankers Hill - San Diego

After dinner with a friend at this San Diego restaurant, I ducked into the restroom before heading to the airport. While the place is has that rough wood/rustic-wine-bar feel (there's even a fake deer head on the wall), the bathroom felt more like an outhouse than an indoor restroom. All I'll really say is that it's clean. 

While the food at Bankers Hill was definitely yummy, the bathroom left much to be desired.

Café Chloe - San Diego, CA

I stopped into this cute French cafe for breakfast on a visit to San Diego.  The single-stall restroom definitely fit in with the rest of the place. With warm lighting even in the middle of the day, it was an embrace walking in. The single orchid on the credenza and the simple candles were a great touch. I loved the double mirror which probably made the stall feel larger (not sure if that's a need in a bathroom but when you only have one, it works).  The sand tiles were set off by a metallic chair rail.  Even in this small place, no details was ignored - the paper towels set on a glass table were very high quality.

Searsucker - San Diego, CA

I had been really wanting to try this restaurant by one of my Top Chef favorite's Brian Malarkey.  Even just trying brunch I wasn't disappointed. Located toward the back of the place, the stalls stood behind simple wooden doors with traditional reading material posted on the walls for those who might have to wait (raving articles about opening night or how the place was setting a trend). 

Nothing exciting about the actual stall but it was clean and I always think a full length door is a better option. 

The sink area offered clean lines with a bit of country charm. It featured two sinks on a marble-wood vanity with chunky round mirrors. I do prefer magic-eye sinks (I never understand why places put magic eye on the toilet but not the sink and vice versa) but maybe it didn't work with the faucets.

Kushi - Washington DC

Friday, 7/8/11, 1 pm - Chinatown

I don't know what I was expecting from Kushi but after a lot of hype, I guess I was expecting more from the whole experience. As for the restroom, the two unisex single stalls were understated and subdued. Bathed in black with white porcelain accents, the streamlined room had some extra touches with a flower/plant. The most interesting part of the bathroom for me was the hot and cold handle which moved vertically as opposed to right and left to turn on the water.


What you don't see in this picture is the urinal across from the toilet. Not being male, I see those types of things in a unisex stall as unnecessary, but I'm sure others would beg to differ. Also not pictured, the free standing toilet paper roll holder, which often strikes me in a place that's trying to be informal as they didn't have time to put a holder on the wall.
